MORE than 250 jobs could be created if plans to revive the fortunes of the former Mullards factory become a reality.

Proposals have been drawn up for a new business park at the sprawling site at Simonstone, which once housed the cathode ray tube manufacturer.

Once the TV industry firm employed up to 2,000 workers at its height but the original buildings have mostly been demolished.

Fort Vale Engineering, the prime movers behind the project, are hopeful of creating 250 new jobs if bosses get permissions for a foundry and an extension to one of their buildings.

Another four industrial units would open as part of a second phase of operations, just to the north of the existing FVE site, alongside a ‘special projects’ building for the engineering company.

The firm, which makes valves and fittings for the road transport industry, is looking to branch out into the power sector.

One of FVE’s main suppliers is already said to be interested in one of the second-phase industrial units.

Under plans for a third phase, nine further buildings, three larger and six smaller premises, would be constructed to the north and east of Simonstone Lane.

A spokesman for planning agents Fletcher Rae said in a report: “The redevelopment of this former industrial site would form a substantial investment by the applicant and would help to bring much needed future investment and employment opportunities to the area.”

Supporters of the scheme argue that the proposals, on the edge of the countryside, are acceptable as Hyndburn Borough Council is currently considering an extension for What More, on the nearby Altham industrial estate.

The proposals have been lodged with Ribble Valley Borough Council.
