A 'VULNERABLE' 80-year-old man has been targeted by a conman who stole a large amount of cash.

Detectives have warned elderly people to be on their guard following the 'distraction burglary' involving a bogus caller.

The elderly victim, was conned by a man claiming to be a gardener, at his home in Simonstone, between 12noon and 12.15pm on Wednesday.

The man said that he had carried out some gardening work in the victim's garden and asked for payment.

The victim, who has been left frightened and upset by the incident, then handed over some money to the conman.

The burglar then asked to use the pensioners's toilet and while the victim was distracted he stole another large sum of money from the house before escaping.

The conman has been described as white, in his late 30s, between 5ft 7ins and 5ft 8ins tall with a shaved head and of medium build.

He had a local accent and was wearing workclothes including a grey sweatshirt.

Officers are also keen to trace the driver of a 'long' silver car which was seen in the area at the time of the incident.

Det Sgt Nigel Watson said: "This is a despicable type of crime where elderly and vulnerable people are targeted by callous criminals. This man has been traumatised by this incident.

"People, especially the elderly, should always be on their guard against bogus callers.

"They should always ask to see some form of identification before allowing anyone into their house and, if still unsure, should not hesitate to call the police."
