A MUCH-LOVED music teacher has bid farewell to students at his primary school as he embarks on his retirement.

Malcolm Spencer was a regular face at Simonstone St Peter’s CofE Primary School, in School Lane, Simonstone, every Friday where he taught singing and percussion to groups of children.

Mr Spencer, from North Yorkshire, was also the driving force behind a number of the school’s performances — both infant school nativities and the junior school’s summer plays.

Headteacher Sally Smith said: “He’s a really talented gentleman. He’s been at the school for about 10 years.

“He really inspired the children, especially the boys.

“He enthused them and made them believe that music is a great thing. We are going to really miss him.”

Before he left he was presented with an ‘oscar’ by the pupils for outstanding contribution to music.

Mr Spencer said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed the last 10 years working at this fantastic school.

“I wish everyone all the best for the future and look forward to seeing you all again at future performances.”

During his retirement he is looking forward to spending more time volunteering with the National Trust and travelling with his wife.
