‘No go’ on Pendle Hill again for Hallowe’en revellers

HALLOWE'EN revellers are again being asked not to head for Pendle Hill.

Pendle Hill had become a hotspot at Halloween, attracting thousands of visitors from across Lancashire.

But a controversial ban was introduced in 2008 due to complaints over drinking, fireworks and anti-social behaviour.

On October 31, Pendle Hill will be closed from 5pm until 3am to all traffic travelling from Sabden.

All vehicles entering the village will be asked to leave via alternative routes either towards Padiham or Whalley.

Access to the Wellsprings Inn at the Nick o’ Pendle will be by ticket only.

There will be ‘no waiting’ cones on both sides of Clitheroe Road from its junction with Whalley Road, Sabden, over Pendle Hill to the Pendleton turn-off.

Contractors will remove any fairground rides, mobile catering units or vehicles parked in the no-waiting area.

Safety cones will also be placed down the centre of the road forming two lanes, one for pedestrians and one for cars travelling from the A59.

Residents of Clitheroe Road, Sabden, will receive leaflets advising them of the parking restrictions.

The measures are backed by Sabden Parish Council.

i bet the business's in sabden are really happy to see this happen yet again on top of the parish council last week openly stating how nice it was to see village so quiet during road closure. so no houses wanted road closed preferred and hallowean to be yet again cancelled. i note that pubs and cafes keep changing hands, white hart is up for let yet again and the post office is for sale. maybe new blood, new houses , continual passing trade and busy evenings such as hallowean are needed????????

i can't believe it that people will take any notice of this garbage...its called common land and we have the right....
the police are acting way outside their mandate if they dare prevent people from visiting pendle hill, and this country is screwed if people allow such if it be so, to go ahead.

Why doesn't everyone just go through Fence and Newchurch? I'm sure there are plenty of businesses that would welcome revellers!!! Sounds like a lot of nimbys to me.Come on, it's only one night a year and it promotes what Pendle is most famous for!!

Pendle hill is part of world wide history for Lancashire witches. Try stopping me from going up, like said Pendle Hill is common land, It comes to something when we try to attract tourism to the county, and there will be 100s of people comming from far counties to visit the hill, Pathetic doogooders spoil it again for local people, Barley & Newchurch will get my custom once again.

the powers that be are terrified of the people because they act against the people. they are especially afraid of large gatherings because they know when the time comes when the british people have had enough, they will be answering to some serious English aggression, its how we roll when the line is crossed.

so slowly they have removed mass gatherings beginning with football after creating the horrors such as Bradford and Hillsborough, then the move against pubs and our sacred weekend out on the town.

Now they move against our ancient customs such as bonfire night and halloween, attempting to stop children gathering in the parks, which is what they are for....children on the streets, forget it....not allowed.

people need to wake up and fast, we need to show these terror mongers, sex experts and all such idiosyncratic nonsense talkers what it means to be an Englishman.

enjoy barley and newchurch, im sure the shops and pubs will make a real effort to make the night safe, enjoyable and profitable. shame the sabden parish council are so short sighted in what the village needs and wants. Not in my back yard should be there motto!!!

come on mr parish council chairman do something to bring people in not drive people away!

because sabden parish council dont want outside people to enjoy the village and what it has to offer. they just happy to look after plant pots as you arrive and report on the playground issues they spend more time trying to win best kept village awards just to justify there egos

To clarify Pendle hill is not closed to people wishing to vsit on foot. And one of the reason for stopping the vehicles is due to traffic problems including irresponsible promoters driving onto the hill itself, causing irreparable damage to the land. As a resident I have no problem with visitors as long as they respect the enviroment and take care not to cause damage to the hill. Personally I do not see why the saben parish coucil cannot allow catering units and even a fairground to be set up on the holme as I'm sure this would generate cash for the village and cover any clean up costs. What does upset me is when I take my dogs up onto the hill the day after only to find all the litter left behind.

mr elf, you have some made some good points, shaame the parish council dont give a damm, they should use the evening to promote sabden, generate visitors, yes charge for licenced stalls, but remember to not shaft the exissting busiensses. be great to see both pubs packed, the cafe full and shippys, village news and the deli all open for an evening of busy trade. But no the parish council simply would prefer to keep advertising sabden as a no go zone on halloween. they are a joke.
