THE only Cof E church in Sabden is set to reopen after undergoing two years of major refurbishment work.

St Nicholas’ Church shut its doors in 2011 after part of its ceiling caved, leaving a ‘gaping hole’ that daylight could be seen though.

Having also found other problems including dry rot, members of the village and the congregation raised more than £70,000 for repairs at the 160-year-old church in Stubbins Lane.

The church also received £58,000 from English Heritage.

The 35-strong congregation have been meeting in the church hall in Wesley Street since St Nicholas’ was shut.

Church warden Bernard Parfitt said: “People have a real buzz about them because we are nearing the end of this whole process now.

“We have all missed being in the church but the work has been vital for its long-term survival.

“The whole community has pulled together and really helped the church out which has been fantastic.

“I don’t think we would be in this position if we didn’t have their support.

“We had a meeting when it all started and 140 people turned up to help us which was amazing.

“It’s been a marathon of a project and I’m glad it’s near the end.”

Angela Whitwell, who has been going to the church for 25 years, said: “I’m very much looking forward to getting back inside the church because the church hall just isn’t the same.

“It’s such a good example of a small village coming together and working towards a common goal.”

The church will officially reopen on Friday, October 11, by hosting a concert by the Earby Brass Band from 7.30pm and will also stage a flower festival on the following two days.
