A PARISH council has pledged to keep fighting for a reduced speed limit on a ‘dangerous’ road between Ribchester and Knowle Green.

The problems with Stoneygate Lane have again been highlighted by Ribchester Parish Council, after a female pedestrian was airlifted to hospital on Wednesday morning.

She was involved in a collision with a black Vauxhall Corsa and suffered a fractured skull and a broken jaw.

The Corsa overturned on the carriageway, and the 17-year-old male driver was also taken to hospital with lacerations and bruising.

The accident happened near Lower Seed Green Farm, where the road is governed by the national speed limit.

Alan Ormand, the council clerk, said: “There’s been a number of crashes along this road, particularly at the junction with Clitheroe Road, including fatal accidents.

“We’ve been pushing Lancashire County Council for a number of years to try and reduce the speed limit, but they’ve always refused.

“We think it should be 40mph and we’ll continue to press them on it.

“It’s a particularly dangerous road to walk along because there’s no pavement and nowhere to hide. The highway code says you should walk towards oncoming traffic but at two points you walk into a blind bend if you do that.”

Police said the injuries suffered by both parties in Wednesday’s crash were serious but not life-threatening. No-one was arrested, they added.

In 2010, 60-year-old motorcyclist Kevin Sinfield was killed in a crash at the junction of Stoneygate Lane and Clitheroe Road, when driver Thomas Patton, of Moorland Road, Langho, missed a stop sign. Patton, then 77, was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving.

David Smith, county councillor for Longridge with Bowland, said: “I’ll look into the history of this road and try and do anything I can to solve the problem.”

Lancashire County Council said in a statement: “We are working closely with the police and will look at whether any measures need to be put in place once they have completed their investigation into this accident.

“There had previously been no recorded personal injury collisions on this part of Stoneygate Lane over the last five years.”
