A RIBBLE Valley school was forced to close today after an outbreak of norovirus.

Longridge CE Primary School in Berry Lane shut its doors to try to eradicate the problem after more than a quarter of the children and some members of staff fell ill this week.

Writing in the school's newsletter to parents a spokesman said: "Unfortunately this week, we have had more than a quarter of our children and some of our staff ill with the norovirus – a letter has been sent home with your child regarding the symptoms of this extremely contagious viral illness.

"Please can I reiterate the importance to remain off school until your children have been free from symptoms for 48 hours.

"This advice should be strictly adhered to for the wellbeing and general health of the whole school community.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to parents."
