Yorkshire will be furious at losing three wickets in the opening session of their County Championship match against Leicestershire at Scarborough today.

Joe Sayers, Phil Jaques and Joe Root all departed as the hosts, invited to bat by visiting skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan, reached lunch at 84-3 from 31 overs.

Leicestershire’s attack has a pretty toothless look to it, although experienced duo Robbie Joseph and Claude Henderson have been their pick on a slow pitch, and it will be a surprise if Yorkshire still do not post a score in excess of 300.

Sayers, dropped twice by Henderson at mid-on and Sarwan at first slip, was the first man to go when he was trapped lbw by new-ball seamer Joseph for eight midway through the 13th over, leaving the score at 28-1.

Jaques was trapped lbw for one as he tried to sweep Henderson in the 16th over, before Root fell three balls later for 19 to Wayne White’s first ball when he drove uppishly to Matt Boyce at point.

At that stage Yorkshire, who have replaced Ajmal Shahzad with Anthony McGrath, were 33-3 having lost three wickets for five runs in 23 balls. But skipper Andrew Gale (33no) and Jonny Bairstow (16no) then shared an unbroken 51 for the fourth wicket.

Sarwan dropped Gale at slip off Henderson’s bowling in the penultimate over of the session, the West Indian’s second simple chance fluffed.
