A LANGHO primary school has been rated as ‘requiring improvement’ by Ofsted.

The education regulator found that pupils at St Mary’s RC School were not making good progress and that there was not enough ‘good quality’ teaching.

The report, which was published on November 27, said that the standards in maths at Key Stage Two were not high enough and that progress through the subject was not good enough.

It also said that teachers ‘do not always ask questions that challenge pupils and deepen their understanding’ and ‘do not always ensure that pupils respond to their comments’.

The Whalley Road school was rated as ‘good’ when last inspected in January 2012.

The report said the leadership and management at the school ‘require improvement’ as school leaders ‘have not been able to secure consistently good teaching and good progress over time’.

However, the report said that the school provides a ‘caring environment’ for its pupils and that disabled pupils or those who have special educational needs receive ‘effective support’.

It also praised the head teacher Janet Malone, after working ‘effectively’ to ‘ensure that there is no inadequate teaching and that the majority of pupils are making at least the progress expected of them’.

Ofsted also said that the school was using the new primary school sport funding ‘successfully’ to improve the quality of physical education and that the money had enabled to school to expand its work with local sports teams.

Mrs Malone said: “We have completely revised the whole curriculum and I’m hopeful that standards will start to rise as a result of that.

“We are addressing teaching and learning as part of our performance development with teachers.

“I believe that the changes that have been put in place, such as the curriculum revision, will raise the quality of teaching the learning at the school.”
