A CONSULTATION on the future of forests is being led by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs.

Last year, the government proposed to change how forests were managed, allowing them to be sold off to private companies and resulting in fierce public outcry.

Ministers were forced into a U-turn on the decision after a report found the woodlands had been undervalued and should remain in public hands.

A new report published by the Independent Forestry Panel on the future of these areas has now been released and residents are being invited to have their say.

Lord John Taylor of Holbeach, parliamentary under-secretary for the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs, said the forestry, wood processing and paper industries, as well as recreational visits to forests and woodlands contribute £4.7 billion to the English economy.

He said: “People rightly cherish England’s forests and woodlands. They are an important part of our heritage and future and I want to see them make an increased contribution to the environment and for everyone to enjoy the many benefits they offer.

“Forests across North West England give the local community a valuable space to get away and enjoy the natural environment.

“Gisburn Forest located within the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a fantastic and inspiring place to experience the outdoors.

“We need to protect and improve our forests and woodlands today to ensure that they can flourish in the face of climate change, pests and diseases in the future.”
