A RUGBY club is offering free beer to entice new players to the club.

Clitheroe Rugby Union Football Club, who gained promotion from Division 3 North last season, are giving £50 worth of free beer to new players in hopes to strengthen their squad.

New members will receive £25 and the member that brings them along will also receive £25, the money being put onto their club card.

First XV Captain, Richard Few, said: “The club is recruiting in line with our growth ambitions. We have had two promotions in two years across our two senior teams so to build on that success we have to grow the playing base.

“Rugby and beer go hand in hand. We are incentivising the new member and who ever invites them. By crediting the money on their club card after they join they can enjoy the club house and post-match beers for free initially.”

CRUFC also came runners-up in the Lightning and Building Services Bowl for the second year in succession after losing 24-11 to league invincibles Penrith 2.

But despite promotion, Clitheroe’s first XV will play in the RFU league Lancs/Cheshire 3 North next season after a new format was decided.

And Richard is positive about the season to come. He said: “The future is great for CRUFC. We have had two brilliant years in the field, in addition to the two promotions our first XV have been in two successive cup finals and more impressively have not lost at home for two years - a story in its self.

“We have an excellent quality in our playing squad but as an ambitious club we want to keep pushing for better.”

He also noted that the rugby club have a ladies team, a junior section and social touch rugby every week.

He said: “We are genuinely providing rugby for all people in the Ribble Valley.

“I have only lived in the area for three years and I've spent two of those as club captain. It's a fantastic club that epitomises every about the sport and the beautiful county of Lancashire.”

The club start their season away at St Helens Club on 2 September and can be contacted on 01200 422261.
