MAJOR plans have been unveiled which could provide an expanded home for the Salvation Army in Clitheroe.

Proposals have been put forward by the organisation which could see supporters move the short distance from their church at the corner of Lowergate and King Lane to the vacant former Jobcentre opposite.

A senior councillor has welcomed the bid, which would see a community cafe and charity shop created on the ground floor, with a worship hall, prayer room and kitchen above.

Cllr Allan Knox, who represents the town’s Primrose ward on Ribble Valley Borough Council, said: “It’s a good idea in principle. I know that the Salvation Army does a lot of good work locally.

“When I was mayor of Clitheroe I went to their Christmas lunch and the way they brought together, including those who would have been alone, was excellent.

“If this project goes ahead then it not only benefit the Salvation Army but the people of Clitheroe, who benefit from their great work.”

The church is said to have had a presence in the town centre for more than 50 years, operating a place of worship and charity shop at their corner premises.

Planning agent Samantha Clements said: “The proposal is to continue this service within the area by relocating to the proposed building which provides an increased opportunity to further develop and support both the existing missional work and service to the community.”

No alterations are proposed as a result of the planning application for the building, which lies within the Clitheroe Conservation Area. It is not officially listed but is still regarded locally as a ‘building of merit’.

But a change of the usage class is required, from professional services to a mixed-use location, for the charity shop, cafe and church operations.

The Jobcentre relocated to the borough council offices in Clitheroe last year.

A decision will be made later this year.
