A MAN has been arrested after allegedly attacking his dog whilst drunk in Clitheroe town centre.

Police said they received a number of calls about the incident which took place on Friday night and the man was arrested on suspicion of  being drunk and disorderly and for a separate animal cruelty offence.

He has now been released on bail.

Police said the dog, which was not injured, has been taken off the man.

PC Tony Walsh said: "A male was arrested on Friday in Clitheroe town centre for being drunk and disorderly and also for an animal cruelty offence, due to him physically abusing his dog which he had with him.

"A number of reports were received regarding the male’s behaviour towards his dog, as well as the male’s general behaviour towards others.

"The dog which is a whippet-type dog was uninjured and is now being looked after by a third party.

"The male in question has been interviewed regarding this matter and has been released on bail pending further enquiries."
