A HIGH school has been rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.

Pupils at St Augustine’s RC High School, in Billington, achieve ‘oustandingly well’ particularly in English and maths, inspectors said.

Headteacher Michael Wright said he was delighted and the school celebrated by treating all the pupils to doughnuts.

Mr Wright said: “It is the 50th anniversary of the school this year, and this is a wonderful way to celebrate all the achievements of the school over that time.

“The success of our school is down to the hard work and commitment of everybody connected with St Augustine’s. We have a highly-dedicated staff team, wonderful children, excellent governors and a very supportive parent body.”

Lead inspector Peter Cox said in a report that the proportion of students attaining five or more GCSE A* to C grades, including English and mathematics was above the national average and rose significantly in 2013.

He said: “All groups of students, including those who receive pupil premium funding, disabled students and those with special educational needs make equally outstanding progress.

“Gaps in attainment between different groups have been narrowing for some time.

“Teachers have excellent relationships with the students who respond exceptionally well to the high expectations set.

“The leadership of the headteacher, his senior leaders, subject leaders and governors is outstanding.

“All are ambitious for the students and provide excellent opportunities for students’ development both academically and personally.”

The inspectors also commented on how well pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development was supported.

It was also noted that the Elker Lane school could improve even further by ensuring every teacher uses the recently-introduced marking policy and give clear written feedback on work.
