Romans’ lack of troops puts end to Ribble Valley battle

THE Roman re-enactment scheduled to take place in Ribchester this weekend has had to be cancelled.

The show, put on by the Legio Secunda Augusta Roman Re-enactment Society, based in Portsmouth, has been running for almost 20 years and had has only had to be cancelled once before when foot and mouth affected the area.

Patrick Tostevin, curator at the Ribchester Roman Museum, said it was a shame that the re-enactment would not be happening this year.

He said: “The group that was coming could not muster enough recruits for it to take place.

“It is a disappointment but it is out of our control.

“This particular group is a voluntary organisation and it relies on the good will of its members.

“They come a long way and offortunately on this occasion they could not bring enough people to make the show viable.

“It is a shame but we are hoping that it will take place again next year.”

The re-enactment should have taken place on Saturday and Sunday.

And maybe, UKIP-Ron, you should have read the article properly and realised that these Romans came from Portsmouth, so a local appeal wouldn't have helped. Additionally, just because you haven't heard of it doesn't mean it isn't popular - the weekend annually attracts around 2,000 visitors to the village.
