Ribble Valley MP calls for rethink on fuel duty

RIBBLE Valley MP Nigel Evans is asking the Government to rethink its plans to increase fuel duty.

Chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne announced in the March budget that 3p would be added to the price of a litre of fuel in August.

But Mr Evans said: “Cars are a part of day-to-day life for many people.

“For many of my constituents they are also an absolute necessity.

“Recent research has suggested that a decrease in fuel duty will actually boost the economy.

“I implore the Chancellor to take this measure and alleviate some pressure from families up and down the country, in rural and urban areas, who simply have no choice but to run a car.

“The UK already has one of the highest rates of taxation on fuel in the world. Raising fuel duty really hits businesses and families hard, across the UK, and it simply gives a further advantage to our economic competitors in Europe and the rest of the world."

Surely, Nigel's not worried about losing his seat at the next election/ Perhaps he could also make a plea not to raise rail fares by RPI + 3% next january as planned or are there more votes in fuel duty rises?
