Less than a year later the Tory candidate would regain Ribble Valley from the Liberal Democrats at the 1992 general election.

His victory would come just months after he had been defeated by Mike Carr, the Liberal Democrat candidate, in a Ribble Valley by-election on March 8, 1991.

The by-election had been caused by the resignation of Ribble Valley MP David Waddington.
