TWO fire crews were called to a fire in the public toilet block in the grounds of Clitheroe Castle earlier today.

Appliances from Clitheroe and Great Harwood attended the incident at 1.09pm.

Police were this evening investigating the cause of the blaze.

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service statement said: "Crews from Clitheroe and Great Harwood attended a fire involving public toilets block in Clitheroe Castle Park grounds.

"They found on arrival that a 10metre by 5metre building had smoke issuing from the roof.

"Two firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used one hose reel and ventilation unit to tackle the fire and clear the building of smoke.

"There was severe fire damage to two toilet roll holders and severe smoke damage to one room.

"Firefighters were at the scene approximately one hour and an investigation into the fire is now underway by police."
