A MAN has been injured after two metal poles fell and hit him at a housing site in the Ribble Valley.

The man, who had been working as an employee for contractor X & P Civil Engineering , suffered suspected broken ankles after the incident at the housing site in Whalley Road, Barrow just before midday today.

Police, the ambulance service and an air ambulance service were called to the site, which is partly owned by Redrow. 

The man has been taken by land ambulance to Royal Preston Hospital. 

A police spokesperson said: "We were contacted by the ambulance service just after midday reporting an accident on a housing site in Whalley Road, Barrow.

"Two metal poles have fallen on the man, who has suffered suspected broken ankles.

"The incident is ongoing and the man is on his way to hospital."

An ambulance service spokeswoman said: "We received a call at 11.55am reporting that a man in his early 20s has suffered suspected broken ankles after two metal poles fell and hit him at a housing site in Whalley Road, Barrow.

"We sent an ambulance, helicopter and rapid response vehicle to the scene.

"The man has been taken by land ambulance to Royal Preston Hospital."

A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said they have been notified by the police of the incident and remain in dialogue with them. 

Matt Grayson, a spokesperson for Redrow, said: “Although part of the site is owned by Redrow, the ongoing work is currently being completed by an external Principal Contractor on behalf of the original Vendor and on their retained land.

“This morning, the contractor made us aware of an accident which occurred at ground level and resulted in one of their employees receiving ankle injuries. 

“The extent of the injuries aren’t currently known. 

“We take health and safety extremely seriously and we’ll be working with the contractor to understand the circumstances surrounding the accident and to fully support the person involved.”

X & P Civil Engineering declined to comment.
