Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans has criticised Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg's views about same sex marriage are rooted in the '16th and 17th century'.

The North East Somerset MP, Jacob Rees-Mogg was asked about his views on same-sex marriage on ITV's Good Morning Britain.

The backbencher told presenters Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid that the Church's teachings on faith and morals were "authoritative" but added it was not for him to judge others.

He said: "Marriage is a sacrament and the decision of what is a sacrament lies with the Church not Parliament.

"With same-sex marriage, that is something that people are doing for themselves."

The openly gay Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans said: "I know Jacob Rees-Mogg is fascinated by the 16th and 17th century and that's where his views on gay marriage belong."

Mr Rees-Mogg also said that his party was more tolerant of religious views than the Liberal Democrats, whose former leader Tim Farron quit after facing repeated questions about his views on gay sex.

The Tory MP added: "It's all very well to say we live in a multicultural country....until you're a Christian, until you hold the traditional views of the Catholic Church, and that seems to me fundamentally wrong."
