A CHANCE meeting in a petrol station ended with a 23-year-old Clitheroe man jumping on the bonnet of another man's car.

Blackburn magistrates heard Joseph Alan Ingham had already damaged a wing mirror and dented a door panel on the car.

Ingham, of Beech Street, pleaded guilty to damaging a VW Polo belonging to Kirkland Sunter. He was ordered to pay £150 compensation.

Matthew Siddall, prosecuting, said Mr Sunter was having difficulties paying for his fuel which caused a delay for other customers. Ingham, who he knew by sight, became involved and tried to provoke Mr Sunter into a fight.

He was dragged away by a woman but as Mr Sunter got into his car he kicked out at the wing mirror and door. He then stood in front of the car and as Mr Sunter started to move forward jumped onto the bonnet and made as if he was going to kick the windscreen.

"He eventually fell off and Mr Sunter drove away," said Mr Siddall.

Gareth Price, defending, said it had been a chance meeting and the delay at the till caused words to be exchanged.

"He says it was a two way exchange," said Mr Price. "When the driver was revving his engine and threatening to drive away my client thought he was in danger and jumped onto the bonnet."
