A SERIES of art projects involving young people are brightening up East Lancashire’s historic railway estate.

Work has been completed on new welcome boards at Langho railway station, after Langho in Bloom and primary school children teamed up with artist Alastair Nicholson.

Pupils from St Leonard’s and St Mary’s helped the bloom group to design a logo, which has been unveiled at the station, off Whalley Road.

The scheme was supported by the Friends of Langho Station and the Clitheroe Line Community Rail Partnership.

Speaking at the unveiling, CRP chairman James Syson said: “This type of project fosters good community spirit.”

But the scheme is one of several in the pipeline for local railway lines, through rial industry partners.

Train operator Northern, through its parent company Arriva, is planning to overhaul Burnley Central railway station, again with assistance from local primary school children.

And plans are being pulled together for youngsters to celebrate Blackburn’s new railway depot, which is currently under construction.

The Wrangling scheme off Sumner Street, as reported previously by the Lancashire Telegraph, will create a new multi-million pound railway hub for staff and train maintenance, and see a £10million bridge built over Galligreaves Street.

Meanwhile the community rail operation has completed a major revamp of its classroom at Accrington station, where students from across East Lancashire learn more about the network.

Brian Haworth, CRL education officer, said: “This modernised space will ensure the education programme at Accrington continues to be a shining example of best practise for out-of-classroom learning experiences on the railway.”
