A MAN caused £2,000 worth of damage in Clitheroe after he claims police failed to help him after he was beaten up.

Matthew Wilkinson-Maynard, 26, of Pinewood, Grindleton, smashed windows at the town’s police station, interchange, Maxwells, and The Old Post Office.

When he was arrested, he told officers he had done it because they had refused to help him.

He pleaded guilty to four charges of criminal damage and was made subject to community supervision for 12 months with a 10-day rehabilitation action requirement, ordered to do 200 hours unpaid work and pay £2,102 compensation, £150 criminal court charge, £85 costs and £60 victim surcharge.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said Wilkinson-Maynard had phoned the police and reported that he had been assaulted but he was told no officers were available.

He became abusive to the call handler before hanging up.

“Shortly after, a witness heard him bragging he had broken a window at the interchange,” Ms Allan said.

“As the witness was calling the police he saw him smash windows at Maxwells and the police station.”

Leanne Hurst, defending, said her client had been assaulted and believed the police had not reacted in an appropriate manner.

“He knows he shouldn’t have behaved this way but under the influence of alcohol his judgement was impaired,” she added.
