RIBBLE Valley residents are being invited to take the plunge in a free new fitness scheme currently that's currently waves across the country.

Ribblesdale Pool in Clitheroe is to host Swimtag, which offers swimmers analytical data via a unique wristband - as used by serious joggers and cyclists

The wristband feeds detailed information from a session to a dedicated web site, featuring a profile page with a colour-coded graph outlining average pace, rest times and stroke rates.

The page includes a swim summary, logs personal best times and training plan progression.

Colin Winterbottom, Ribble Valley Council’s culture and leisure services manager, said: “A gentle swim can burn more than 200 calories in half an hour and a fast front crawl can burn as many calories as an eight-mile run.

“Swimming can support up to 90 per cent of the body’s weight in water, meaning those with disabilities, injuries or illnesses, such as arthritis, can also take part in sport in a comfortable and safe environment.

“Swimtag is a valuable aid to swimmers by motivating and encouraging them to reach their goals, and it’s free.”
