A VILLAGE music festival is set to for its biggest event yet which will see its population double next month.

Now its fifth year, Whalley Live 2015 will be hosted over the August bank holiday weekend and thousands of music lovers are expected to descend on the area.

Events will be held over the three nights from Saturday, August 22, in the Dog Inn and DeLacy Arms pubs and at Brady’s Wine Bar.

Local musicians and bands including pop act Snatch, indie band Bad Cardigan, Accrington five-piece rockers Rawkuss, Moon Before Morning and there will also be a soul/motown disco.

There will be a summer fair from 10am to 4pm at Whalley Grammar School, which will be opening the rooms up for the public.

Alongside the music, the history of the village including Whalley Abbey, King Street properties, the primary school, grammar school and Calderstones will be celebrated.

The original event in 2010 saw around 1,000 people enjoy the festivities, a number that is expected to be dwarfed this year.

Mags Twist, who is a member of the organising committee, said: “Whalley Live started in 2010 under Whalley Chamber of Trade by Gillian Darbyshire who helped get the pubs working together to bring Live Music to the village.

“Gillian said we probably started with around 1,000 people in the village with music in all pubs and the stage in the Whalley Arms Car Park.

“I got involved and helped Gillian bring bands to the pubs and I also do many events for The Dog Inn, Whalley.

“Last year we decided to get other venues involved including Whalley Village Hall, Rendezvous nightclub, churches – and it was a huge success.”

Beez Taxi will be offering discounted taxi fares in a three-mile radius between 6pm and 1am.

On the Sunday, a table-top sale will be held at Whalley Village Hall from 10am to 3pm, and people can reserve a table by calling Honey on 01254 822350.

In May, music lovers in the district were given another reason to celebrate after the organisers of the cancelled Sabden Live festival announced that it would return next year.

Fans were left disappointed in March after this year’s music festival, which attracts big crowds in the village at the foot of Pendle Hill, was called off by bosses.
