A CLITHEROE dad-of-two who has been given six months to live has won his fight for a disabled parking space outside his house.

Fergus Brown, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in January, contacted Lancashire County Council in February to inquire about the possibility of having a space outside his terrace house because of his decreasing mobility.

The 61-year-old had asked the council to fast track his application because of his terminal illness which has seen him being given a DS1500 medical certificate indicating that he could die before the end of the year.

The former self-employed business consultant, who lives in Chester Avenue, said that the parking in his street is so bad that he has previously been forced to wait for 40 minutes to move 100 yards closer to his home so he could make it to the front door.

Following the request from Mr Brown the county council has now agreed to mark out a parking bay outside his home and said that work should be starting in the coming weeks.

Mr Brown said: “It’s wonderful news and it’s great that it is finally going to happen.

“I know that there are other disabled people around who also need help but I would have hoped that the council would have helped before now.

“I have been waiting for far too long.

“The street is used by many people to park and then walk into the town centre to shop if they don’t want to pay for the council car parking.

“That means that there is very limited space for residents.

“No one on the street expects to be able to park outside their home and I was the same but now it’s more of a need for me .”

A spokesperson for the council said: “Following on from Mr Brown’s application, we plan to mark out a temporary disabled parking bay outside his home. This work should be done in the next few weeks.”
