A MAJOR scheme to upgrade facilities is under way at a Ribble Valley church.

Christ Church Chatburn, built 175 years ago, will undergo a £110,000 project to improve its facilities.

The development will include an upgraded heating system, a modern kitchen, a cafe area, a disabled- and child-friendly toilet, and a family meeting room and vestry.

The project will provide better facilities for worshippers and for large congregations, with the aim of increasing the role of the church as the centre of community activities in the village.

A spokesman for the church said that building contractors will be looking to minimise disruption to services. It is hoped that the development will be finished during March, in time for Easter.

Most of the money has been raised during the last 12 months through grant applications and fundraising events held by church members.

Rev Andy Froud, who is also in charge of St Mary Magdalene in Clitheroe and St Leonard’s Church in Downham, said: “I am really grateful to everyone at the church who has worked so hard to raise a lot of money for this project.

“The church will be enhanced enormously by the introduction of these facilities.

“This has really brought everyone together in Chatburn in a good way, which is fantastic.

“I thank everyone who has donated so generously and for their marvellous support for the music events and fundraising activities, and the six organisations that recognised the value of the development through awarding significant grants.

“It has been a tremendous effort which has brought the community together and will benefit everyone in Chatburn.”

Future music events at the church are due to be held to raise the remaining funds for the project. For more details, call 01254 384893.
