AN ELECTRIC car charging point could be installed in Clitheroe.

The capital bid has been made by Ribble Valley Borough Council and if successful the point would be constructed on the car park in Railway View.

The bid has been submitted on the understanding that external grant funding will be available.

Without the funding the council’s Member Car Park working group has said that the bid would not be viable.

The council has said that the source of the extra funds could be the Office For Low Emission Vehicles.

The charge point would be installed in one parking bay and would include a rapid plug in charge point, a power supply and signage.

A spokesman for the council said: “It is understood that a full vehicle charge could be achieved in 30 minutes and that this could typically provide sufficient power for a minimum of a 70 mile journey.

“Such a facility would encourage tourism within the area and patronage of Clitheroe.

“Parking within the bay would be limited to electric powered vehicles and the duration of stay would be limited to a maximum of one hour to promote turnover and hence the availability of the chargingpoint.

“By the time the point is installed it is likely sufficient vehicles will be in use to ensure the bay is kept occupied.”
