A CYCLIST suffered a broken shoulder after being hit by a car in Clitheroe yesterday morning.

An air ambulance landed near the Shackleton Garden Centre, in Clitheroe Road, after the accident, which happened at the roundabout just before 11am.

DI Andy Winter, of Lancashire Police, said the man was taken to hospital with a broken shoulder around an hour later, and said no arrests had been made.

Police in Burnley took to social networking site Twitter to warn motorists after the crash, which happened two days into Brake's Road Safety Week.

Officers tweeted: "Road users please slow down. It's been wet but very bright today. Serious accident with cyclist breaking his shoulder today as not seen by car."

Speed checks were also carried out in Clitheroe yesterday.

Police said 46 cars were caught speeding in the 20mph limit in Henthorn Road.

As part of Road Safety Week, Brake released data that showed 9,739 motorists were fined for careless driving or speeding in 2013.

The charity also said more than a third of children in the north west said they had been hit or nearly hit by a car when out on foot or on bike, and said one fixed penalty is handed out every five minutes.
