A GARDEN-share project in Sabden is calling on residents who have a spare patch to come forward to create mini-allotments.

The project was started following a failed attempt last year to set up a new allotment site in the Ribble Valley village.

Organiser Sue Clarke from Gardeners Row is calling on anyone who has extra space in their garden and is willing for someone to use it to get in contact.

The mum-of-two and grandmother-of-three said there was a ‘real interest’ in the village for the project as a lot of people were interested in setting up a new allotment.

That bid failed because a suitable plot of land wasn’t found.

Sue, 67, said: “This project happened by accident really and came out of the failed attempt to get a new allotment.

“It just so happened one day that I was approached by Jenny Hart whose garden was too big for her to manage on her own.

“A lot of people in the village live in terrace houses and don’t have a garden or if they do it’s very small.

“There are some allotments in Sabden already but they are all full up.

“This project means that we can, for the first time in 13 years since we moved to Sabden, grow our own vegetables.

“It has given my partner Eric and I an interest, exercise and pleasure and it’s very satisfying to grow your own vegetables and eat them the day they are picked.

“The hard bit is finding people who have space in their garden and who are also willing to lend that to someone else.

“The real focus is to try to find people who are willing to donate part of their land because we know that the demand for a plot is very high in the village.”

The project comes a year after Transition Town Clitheroe set up a similar scheme in the town.

The scheme, which was aimed at people on the waiting list for allotments, also included residents who donated land receiving 25 per cent of any produce grown. For more information call Sue on 01282 680002.
