Hyndburn MP Graham Jones' warning over skip tax
11:00pm Thursday 31st May 2012 in Politics news
A SKIP hire firm has warned it may have to make 18 people redundant after a new waste tax was introduced.
Environmental Waste Recycling, which has a base at the Moorfield Industrial Estate, in Altham, has said the new taxation rules would cost the company an extra £35,000 a week, putting jobs at risk.
The business currently employs 30 staff but the additional charges will mean the workforce will have to be slashed by half.
Temp Moran, manager at the skip company, said: “We are feeling the affects already.
“We are losing money and it is very serious.
“The staff are just waiting to see what happens, we have had a chat and I have explained what will happen.
“We will just have to see what we can do, times are difficult for everyone.
“We have got a good business but it won’t stand this.” The new tax, which was intro-duced last week, means material waste, like soil and brick, will now be charged the same £64 per tonne tax rate as the one that is used for active landfill.
Some firms are being forced to incr-rease their cha-rges from around £130 per skip to £300, which will mean individuals, not just businesses, will be hit.
Mr Moran said: “I expect we will see a great increase in flytipping.
“Because people will take the risk.”
Hyndburn MP Graham Jones said he was ‘outraged’ by the news.
He said: “The industry is up in arms and it is the same case in Hyndburn.
“It is going to blow out businesses over night, within a week, it could all be destroyed.
“I want to ask how we ended up in this situation and what contingency plans are in place to deal with it.
“I am not having 18 staff being laid off at one company and nothing being done about it.”

This tax is a farce just another way of taxing Joe Public. Stick 2 fingers up at the EEC get Britain out of Europe and where possible re-cycle bricks into hard core with good quality soil should be re-used on the land. I see another U turn by the gov on this 1

Sounds like another bad idea conceived by bods who sit at desks pouring over spread sheets and pie charts to extract as much tax as possible without any knowledge of real life let alone the industry they are affecting. I see another U turn coming

And if they can't get through the same workload it won't be costing the company £35,000 because they won't be disposing of as much waste material.

The great green con again. they shut recycling centres and wonder why fly tipping increases. This tax will also hit the building trade extremely hard. what have they got for brains?

This bunch of turkeys we have in now courtesy of those who decided to vote for this government who are inept and totally set on destroying the fabric of our society. Whatever they do they, the Posh boys are safe in the knowledge that they will be alright!
How they can justify the sacking of the eighteen workers is beyond comprehension. Losing eighteen tax-payers and paying eighteen benefit claiments is not good economics by any standard.
Oh yes! it was a good show of Austerity on the Thames yesterday! I was given to believe that we, as a country, for any pensioner to live beyond his/her three score and ten!
