And ,in a positive sign for the future, it is estimated that almost 34,000 young people have taken part in hustings gatherings since last October.

Youth councils elected the successful dozen, after candidates gave a closing speech extolling their virtues.

The winner in Burnley was Hollie Foden, in Hyndburn it is Hardeep Sidh, and Jack Cooke triumphed in Pendle.

Rossendale’s representative is now Joe Henry, Michael Hickey was selected for Ribble Valley, and Loren Coles at Chorley.

County Coun Mark Perks, young people’s cabinet member, said: “I would firstly like to thank the thousands of young people who took part, either by attending meetings, or standing for election.

"I attended many of the elections myself, and was hugely impressed with the commitment the young people showed, both to the democratic process and to their local communities.”
