PENDLE MP Andrew Stephenson has hit back at Labour’s opposition to the HS2 high speed rail link to the north of England.

A number of Labour MPs have spoken against the £42.6bn scheme which would provide quicker links between London, Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds.

During Prime Ministers Questions in the House of Commons yesterday, Mr Stephenson said better rail links to the south were vital to work alongside East Lancashire projects, such as reinstatement of the Todmorden Curve.

He said: “Thanks to the Government’s Regional Growth Fund, £8.8m is being spent reopening the Todmorden Curve rail link.

“However, better rail connections to the south of England are also vital.

“Does the Prime Minister not agree it is absolutely outrageous for the party opposite (Labour) to be challenging HS2, putting in jeopardy jobs and investment in the north of England?”

Mr Cameron said: “There is a real danger, with Labour's antics, that they are letting down the north of England, letting down the Midlands.”
