'Bikes not bombs' protest

A RAILWAY campaigner took part in a three-day bike ride to oppose plans for massive spending on Britain's nuclear weapons.

Roy St Pierre, 62, from Trawden, joined 16 other riders who braved snow and strong winds on the bikes-not-bombs' ride from London to Aldermaston Atomic Weapons Establishment, where they joined 5,000 protesters.

Roy said: "It's madness - £78billion being spent on Trident during it's lifetime when that money is so needed to improve our society for the better.

"A tiny fraction would pay for the re-opening of the missing Colne to Skipton rail link.

"The Cold War is dead; it's time we changed our priorities, lived up to our obligations under the Nuclear non-proliferation treaty and started seriously to negotiate nuclear disarmament with the other nuclear powers rather than developing new weapons of mass destruction."

Riders were provided with overnight hospitality from the Sikh Temple in Slough and Reading International Solidarity Centre.
