Airgun shootings in Pendle spark police warning

A SERIES of air gun shootings in a quiet Pendle village has led to a plea to parents by police officers in Colne.

Senior officers are becoming concerned following a number of incidents involving air rifles in Trawden since the start of the year.

In the latest incidents, a window at the Sun Inn and a home in Cottontree Lane have had windows broken by air rifle pellets.

Teenagers are thought to be behind the majority of incidents and parents are being asked to monitor the activities of youngsters who own such weapons.

Sgt Andy Cartwright, of Colne Police, said: “We are quite concerned for the safety of people in Trawden because of the misuse of air weapons.”

He is warning that possession of air weapons in a public place is an arrestable offence and can carry sentences of imprisonment, if a person is successfully prosecuted.

The Sun Inn window was smashed between 4.30pm and 6.30pm and the Cottontree Lane damage occurred at around 7.40pm on Sunday.

Witnesses are being sought to the incidents, and any other sightings of people with air rifles in Trawden and surrounding areas.

The youngsters are thought to have been trying to shoot at birds but police are worried there may be more damage or injuries if the behaviour continues.

Previous reports of shootings have mentioned teenagers, perhaps accompanied by either a boxer-type dog or Doberman, walking through fields near the village.

Sgt Cartwright added: “We would appeal to parents who live in the area to help us. It is more than likely that the offenders will live locally.

“We want parents to be aware of what their children are doing, and if they want to dispose of such weapons then they can contact community officers in Trawden.”

Potential witnesses or concerned parents are being asked to call PC Hilary Gregson, community beat manager, on 07903 306281, or police community support officer Daniel Rowland on 07985 519224.

Simple answer if they get caught, enrol them for a short course in the army. If they enjoy shooting after that there is a career in the army where they can use a rifle illegally, legally if you understand what I mean.
