Hotel to be turned into mosque and community centre

PLANS to turn a derelict grade II-listed hotel into a community centre and mosque have been given the go-ahead.
Councillors approved proposals for the old Groves Hotel, Manchester Road, Nelson, to be converted into a community centre, a mosque and business starter units at this week's Nelson Committee meeting.
Pendle Council officers had recommended the proposals for the 19th century hotel, which had 45 signatures backing the application, be given the green light.
The new mosque, accommodating people from Medina Mosque, which has outgrown its current premises in Forest Street, will not have a call to prayers.
The main building will house a café area, a meeting/function hall with the rest being utilised for prayers, meetings and storage.
The coach house will be converted into four business starter units with natural stone being used for the buildings.
And there will be 80 parking spaces on the land along the front and the rear yard of the hotel, which is currently unsafe.
Coun Mohammed Iqbal welcomed the application.
He said: "We have to bear in mind that the Groves Hotel has been a major eye-sore in Nelson.
"Various political parties and councillors have tried to address this.
"They want to bring into use a Grade two listed building which is the most important part of this application."
Coun Roy Edwards seconded the motion for approval. He said: "This is an overgrown monstrosity and is someone is going to do something with it I can only welcome it."
A representative from developers UKIM Madina Masjid said they would be working with English Heritage to maintain the original features of the building and that work would start on the roof within six months.

sunni muslimm - above how can u say that the people that follow that mosque have no place in islam, you cant be the judge of that, only allah judges who the true muslims.

Budgie, N.Z. well i carnt vouch fir everyone but i can say this for that Saudi Arabia is a country that has Shariah Law which counts for all not just non-muslim but muslim aswell and justice happens.Well you ask my opinion on that i am disgusted with it but what can you say crime is everywhere the goverment needs to invest more money in crime,NHS,Education rather then Iraq war.Also there are loads of other matters that i could arise but i think buliding bridges between the 2 community should be are main priorty.

My Uncle worked in Saudi Arabia for about 20 years and saw alo, he himself was in the back of a Taxi once which crashed into a another car. Both drivers were Muslim locals and so my Uncle got the blame.

However, you go to Saudi Arabia and start to quote the Bible or have a alcholic drink, .

Budgie, N.Z. you talk about muslim practising their religion.We live in a democratic state which entitles everyone to have there own beliefs and are allowed to practice their faith.People should be allowed to practise their faith regardless which ever country there are in.In Pakistan there are churches which chirstians practise there faith no one is stopping them everyone has there own belefis and they should be allowed to believe in these. Can you tell me were these people are sold this yet happens everywhere in society i have seen people from other faith sell there children for money and for slaves.So you can not just point fingers at Muslim it happens everywhere but can you tell me which muslim are doing this give me some evidence.Muslim accept everyone you can not say this dont muslim and non-muslims work together in society and even such projects as Building Bridges they have non-muslims and muslim who work together so you can not say that they dont accept others.

The point I'm trying to make my friend is ;- This Community Centre/Mosque is supposed to be a place for all however as many people beleive it will only be welcoming for Muslims, , this shows that most beleive you muslims will only accept your own, even in a foreign land.

Nelson Massive, Please give me your opinion with regards to Brunshaw Primary School in Burnley.
They have less then 5 % of Muslim pupils and there parents refused to let them attend assembly. The School put together a package where the assembly would contain a christian and islam flavour as to enable the childern to understand each others faiths from an early age.
Well, all the christian parents voted in favour of this, however NOT ONE of the Muslim parents would allow their kids to attend anytime christian.
Hence, the 5% of muslim kids were isolated at assembly time.
Do you get my point here ?

Budgie, N.Z. well all people should have right to practice theere faith thats what i am saying and also this is a democratic country which has rule of law and gives the right to everyone of freedom of speech.Also how are the people segregating themselves from others people nowdays work together so how can you call this segregating from others.Am saying that everyone should be allowed to practice there faith and we should not stand in its way and work together to build bridges between the communitys.

My parents lived in Burnley, Nelson during their younger years and it was a great place to live.
They don't have any desire to re-visit.

I have a solution that will solve everything.
Why not knock it downa and build a big f*king thing. Doesnt matter what it is, just call it the big f*king thing. People will wanna work at the big f*king thing, so more jobs will open up. And tourists will say "Hey, i wanna see the big f*king thing, can we go dad?" which then sends more tourism. I am a resident in Nelson, I am also Muslim. To be frankly honest I am sick and tired of all these mosques and Islamic schools being built in our communities as in reality all that they are causing is further divisiveness. They are already 6 mosques in Nelson, how many more do we need??? Nelson IS BECOMING A MINI PAKISTAN and it is about time that the council stop pandering to the requests of the asian community but take a wholistic view otherwise they will be more of an influence from parties such as the BNP in the area. If the muslim community actually practiced what it preaches then they would be greater unity with the wider community. Mosques these days are just 4 walls with a dome built on top!!! There is alot of problems with the Muslim youth of today that these mosques are not actually tackling, to be honest they have no influence over anything!!! Enough of this political correctness and start looking at the bigger picture Pendle Council!!!

I was saddened by reading some of the negative comments made by the local people about this project. Therefore this project is needed to full completion inshallah in order to show the true Islam about how Islam tells humankind about being caring and loving to Muslims as well as non Muslims. Also the friend who posted the comment about this project being run by UK Islamic mission which group supposedly came on dispatches is also a charity which provides relief to disaster struck areas, therefore showing you the fact that this group provides and is involved with the care of humanity.
Coming to the building that is being renovated is a eyesore and it needs something doing to it as it will make Nelson a better place and all in all IT WILL KEEP THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER AS IT WILL PROVIDE FOR THE MUSLIM AND NON-MUSLIM COMMUNITY AND I FULLY SUPPORT THIS PROJECT.

what is Islam? it is tolerance and respect for all other peoples, try to live up to this ideal of Islam and you might find that your non-Muslim neighbours are more tolerant of you.

I'm sorry that so many people have such a negative view of Islam, but you are basing it on what you see being done in the name of Islam, not on what Islam is.
Britain has a free education system unlike so much of the rest of the world therefore I would expect that the ordinary guy on the street is able to make choices about what he believes rather than being led by a ring through the nose. As for the Mosque, well those involved are doing the community a service. They are renovating a grade 2 listed building with money collected from family, friends and the community. Is this wrong? They live here, they will die here as will we all. this is our country as much as it is anybody's and we love it and will die for it.

Thats exactly why this project is needed as it needs to show true Islam which is all about caring and giving to the muslim and non muslim community. I know the people involved and this is what they aspire to achieve, but unfortunately there is a lot of negativity associated with Islam, and little do people know of the love and compassion always shown by the prophet. Little do they know that the same religion that they mock revers Jesus and his mother Mary. To such an extent that a whole chapter has been named after that very special lady in the Quran (Muslims holy book) called chapter Mary. We need to stop looking through media or blinkered eyes and give these people a chance who ask nothing more than to help bring our community together. I for one fully support them and time will show how inclusive their vision is for the people of the area. May God bless all involved. Ameen.
