Victory close for Nelson school campaigners

A CAMPAIGN to keep a Nelson church primary school in the same parish has moved closer to victory.

Parents, councillors and residents reacted angrily when Lancashire County Council unveiled plans to move St Paul’s Primary, in Hibson Road, to a new site over a mile away.

Education chiefs proposed to move the school to the former Mansfield High site, in Elland Road, Brierfield, to double the capacity to 420.

But after objections, talks are now taking place between county hall and Pendle Council over building a new school on the site of the former Edge End High School, which is on the same road as St Paul’s.

Coun Eileen Ansar, who has been heavily involved with the Save St Paul’s Campaign, said: “This would be fantastic news. It is what we have said we wanted all along.

“We have never been against the new school but we said it should stay in the parish, and building it on the Edge End site would make sure that happened.”

Lynn Mappin, head of pupil places at the county council, said: “We have listened carefully to the responses made during the consultation.

"While there were no objections to the proposal to expand St Paul’s to meet the increased demand for places, there were objections to the use of the Mansfield site.

“As a result, we are working closely with our colleagues at Pendle Council on a fresh proposal to move St Paul’s to the site of the former Edge End School, which is much nearer.”

Sports pitches and a pavilion are currently being built on the Edge End site, but Pendle Council said there was sufficient land to build the school as well.

Let us hope that this new school is built on Edge End a site of learning for many a year. Who in their right mind would move a primary school into another town beggers belief. St Paul's goes back hundreds of years as a parish. Land was made available behind Halifax Rd before WW11 This land was released by LCC nolonger required when a builder wanted to build houses on the land in the 1990's this has never been built on. Turned down by the Government so Edge End it is.

As a parent of 3 boys currently at St Pauls this is a fantastic step forward. Parents at the school understand the need for a new modern learning envoionment however to expect them to transfer them to the old Mansfield site is ridiculous. In no time at all with all the will in the world links to the parish and its church would soon be broken. Edge End is the ONLY option.

I agree with peppapigs comments it is a fantastic step but what I do not agree with is the handwork and dedication being taken away from the parents and the campaign leader Neil Mcgowan. Yes maybe the councillors have helped in the background but its the campaign leader and parents who have took this fight to where we are now!! Not Coun Eileen Ansar

There has been a lot of comments and rumors about Neil mcgowan might be putting him self forward to be running for Pendle Councillor this year? as Councillor Mohammed Khalid is up for Re election. Is there any foundation to this? Because if there is I can honestly say My husband and I will be voting for him. Because of the hard work and determination that he made sure he got what we needed in this community plus he never took any praise for what he had done I heard him tell people in the school yard it was not him who did it, It was the community and parents that got behind him that did it .
