Burnley bus station receives quality award for being ‘one of the safest in Britain’

A BUS station has been deemed ‘one of the safest in Britain’ after becoming only the third in Lancashire to pick a quality award.

Burnley’s bus station has received the SafeMark award which assures passengers it is an area where they can feel safe.

The bus station was visited by ‘mystery shoppers’ and marked against a series of criteria, including health and safety, CCTV coverage, staff training and measures in place to tackle anti-social behaviour.

The judges looked at issues such as making sure there are no dark corners where people could lurk or the design and monitoring of toilets to tackle any illegal activities.

“It’s a bit like getting a Michelin star,” said David Woodroffe, group passenger facilities manager with bus operator Transdev Blazefield.

“It’s a big honour for the bus station and reflects all the hard work that’s gone into making it as safe as possible for everyone who uses it.”

Linzi O’Donnell, lead officer at the Lancashire Safer Travel Unit said: “Minimum requirements must be met in areas such as passenger security, ability to deal with incidents of crime and anti-social behaviour, maintenance of facilities and staff training.

“It is a preventative measure and aims to support staff and promote the feeling of safety and security for passengers and the general public.”

The bus station will be judged annually and will have to maintain its standards in order to retain the honour.

Nelson and Chorley bus stations are the other sites in Lancashire to have achieved the award.

The station’s architects, RoC Consulting have previously collected a Bus Industry award for the design of the interchange and its retail units.

And Nelson hasn't even got an electronic information board now.

What a shame the electronic information board no longer displays bus departure times -however not to worry as Mystic-Meg will be on hand to predict the departure times to help maintain it's high standards.

It is a top bus station just a shame it takes so long for a bus journey from Clitheroe to Burnley especially the one that goes via sabden.

I visited there a couple of weeks ago. It's much better than the last one and far superior to the 'Cattle Market' of old.

A very good bus station but the blank information board speaks volumes about public transport provision in the Uk. I can't imagine such a decision in our near neighbours across The Channel. Also, imagine the outcry if they switched off the information boards at railway stations but bus passengers - mainly pensioners, students and the less affluent don't make a fuss.

I am surprised as I find it very intimidating at night. I did report someone for using bad language very loudly on one occasion and was told by the security officer there was nothing he could do. My first thought was why are we paying him!

I am one of those pensioners who use buses regularly and miss the display boards in Burnley Bus Station. Now that facility is no longer in use, we are all like headless chickens, up and down the bus station trying to find the right bus and gate that we require. Giving us a useful tool, then taking it away is poor customer service. Please, please, please, give it back
