Games cancelled after metal thieves strike in Nelson

SCRAP metal thieves left footballers in Pendle high and dry after a break-in at a sports pavilion in Nelson.

Copper piping was taken during the raid on the changing rooms at Swinden playing fields, off Cravendale Avenue, overnight on Friday and Saturday.

And without any proper shower facilities several fixtures at the ground had to be cancelled over the weekend.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “They have entered the pavilion and have apparently stolen copper piping.

“There were no washing facilities available there so the matches which were due to take place had to be cancelled.”

Investigations are continuing into how thieves managed to break into the pavilion, on the banks of the Leeds Liverpool Canal, which is surrounded by six-foot security fencing.

The ground plays host to junior sides from Barrowford Celtic and Pendle Charity League outfits such as Shooters Clarets, Lord Nelson and Crooked Billet.

Where are travellers always blamed? Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!!
.
Sorry but that is classic. Innocent little us? Do you think we came down with yesterdays rain? Numerous vans up and down people standing on the back looking into private property. If it's not travellers taking the metal it's travellers who are processing it. No matter how you call it, travellers are involved at some stage of these thefts.

classic line , ' Do You think we came down with Yesterdays rain '.
Copper piping and lead has been stolen from a couple of buildings that I know of and I'm afraid it was the travellers , also because of their 'dont give a ****' reputation no one will approach them , or trace them as they move about so much,

I regualrly see a battered lorry driving round with WASTE MANAGEMENT SERVICES roughly painted on the side. In the cab are three guys who would make Fagin look like a male model. Two keep watch at each end of the back street, while the driver checks out back yards.

Yet another example of why scrap metal transactions should be cashless. There is an e-petition on line which calls for an amendment to the 1964 Scrap Metal Merchants Act. This will go some way towards stopping this current plague of metal thefts that are occurring. It should also, I hope, result in the collection of tax revenue from those who choose to live outside of society. http://epetitions.di
