AN extraordinary meeting of Lancashire County Council to debate a call for the resignation of its leader Geoff Driver is to be reconvened.

The original session on Friday September 15 was abandoned after the collapse of Independent Cllr Tony Jones.

Labour said it had withdrawn the motion but now chief executive Jo Turton, who job is threatened by a restructuring proposed by Cllr Driver, has said it must be completed.

The hour-long meeting had seen a fiery debate over a 'no confidence' call for the Tory leader to quit over his being repeatedly bailed as part of a police investigation into county council contracts.

Cllr Azhar Ali, Labour group leader and Nelson East representative, said: "Wer have been told this meeting has to be concluded.

"We intended to conclude the debate and move the vote quickly when it has been arranged."

Cllr Peter Britcliffe, chairman of the Tory group and representative for Oswaldtwistle, said: "I can see no point in reopening this.

"Labour has said everything it wanted to say and will not win the vote.

"I shall move closure quickly."
