A MAN is wanted in connection with a rape in Nelson.

Police have taken the unusual step of releasing a picture of a man they wish to question in connection with the alleged incident which happened on Sunday, September 17 in Pendle Street.

Officers have urged Lithuanian national Viktor Dadelo, 30, of Dalton Street, to come forward and have warned people not to approach him but to call police if they see him.

Detectives launched an investigation after the woman in her thirties reported she had been sexually assaulted in Pendle Street at around 10.40pm on September 17.

A European arrest warrant has also been issued for Dadelo for other alleged violent offences in Lithuania.

Dadelo has links to Greater Manchester and police believe he may have travelled to the Rochdale area.

Temporary Detective Sgt Darren Irving said: “We want to trace Viktor Dadelo as part of our investigation into this rape and I would appeal for anyone who sees him or knows where he might be to get in touch.

“I would also appeal to Dadelo himself to come forward and speak to us if he sees this appeal.

"People are advised not to approach Dadelo if they see him but to call police."

As reported at the time of the attack, an area of woodland next to Pendle Water was taped off for several hours while dozens of officers carried out a search around the embankment and waters edge.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting log number 0988 of September 25 or 999 in an emergency.
