THOSE looking to find tranquillity this summer are being invited to try Tai Chi in a Nelson Park.

Free sessions are being offered in Victoria Park in a bid to boost health and wellbeing.

It is the third year Lighthouse Tai Chi have offered the weekly sessions, which run until the end of the month.

Tai Chi, which was originally developed as a martial art in 13th century China, combines deep breathing and relaxation with flowing movements.

The first session of the year was opened yesterday by the mayor and mayoress of Pendle David and Barbara Whalley.

David Pelling, Lighthouse Tai Chi owner and instructor, who runs the sessions with Helena Kean, said last year more than 35 people took part each week.

He said: “People of all ages and abilities and from all communities joined in.

“We even had a group of tourists visiting from Beijing.

“Everyone is welcome to join us and to do as much or as little as they wish.”

The pair teach more than 250 people in 19 weekly sessions across Lancashire.

He said: “The event in the park helps us to reach out into the community to allow people to try Tai Chi more easily. Local primary school pupils who have participated in our schools programme also bring their family and friends to try it.”

Sponsored by the Marsden Building Society, Pendle Council Parks, Lancashire County Council and Up & Active, the sessions take place on the bowling green on Tuesdays throughout August between 1.30pm and 2.30pm.

Children are also welcome with a responsible adult.
