POLICE have warned residents to be alert after ‘roofers’ tried to scam a homeowner in Nelson.
Watch liaison office Keith Sandham, of the Burnley-based east division, says people should not do business with anyone on their doorstep.
He adds that people should not let strangers have access to their roof.

He said: “Workmen will approach homeowners and offer to carry out a free, no obligation roof survey, taking pictures of any damage to show you. This is the difficult part as you won’t know if that damage was there or not in the first place. They will then charge an enormous sum of money to repair it.
“If you think you may need repairs to your roof or other jobs and are over 60 and/or disabled then ring St Vincent’s Housing Association on 0845 050 0570. They may not be able to do the job for you, as they generally do smaller handyman type jobs but they do have a list of reputable local tradesmen that they can recommend at competitive prices.”
