Police and fire officers launched an investigation into the fire in Brentwood Road after the fire tore through the property at around 7.30pm on Wednesday, May 27. The cause of the incident is still being investigated as is currently being treated as ‘unexplained’.

Police have confirmed that they are not treating the fire as suspicious. At the time of the blaze neighbours said that Mr Brooks had lived alone at the property for around 10 months.

Four fire engines were called to the scene to tackle the flames after neighbours raised the alarm.

Fire investigators and police detectives remained at the scene until late carrying out tests to try to determine the cause of the blaze.

Police conducted door-to-door enquiries and carried out forensic examinations at the scene, with the victim’s body only being removed from the house the following day.

The family of the man have asked the police to inform the public to respect their privacy and that a picture and a tribute would not be provided.

At the time a neighbour said: “There was a bit of a bang and when we looked out there was smoke coming from the living room and there was a pretty big fire.

“The fire engines were here pretty quickly and they had to evacuate the neighbours to the side of the house just in case the fire spread any further.”
