A SPURNED young dad has been given a suspended jail sentence after repeatedly flouting a restraining order.

Shaun Ruane, 20, had never broken the law until his relationship with Hayley Truelove broke down, but his criminal record started when he ran over her foot in his car when she was pregnant.

Burnley Crown Court heard Ruane was given a suspended jail term for assault and dangerous driving after the incident last August.

He went on to harass the victim and in May received the restraining order, which was to last until November next year.

However, a month later, on June 18, he was back in court for harassment and was locked up.

The hearing was told on August 24, just three weeks after his release, Ruane turned up at Miss Truelove's home at 4.30am.

Ruane, who has been on remand since September 11, won his freedom after a judge, who told him his behaviour had been “wholly unacceptable”, said he had decided to give him a last chance.

The defendant, of Walton Lane, Nelson, had admitted two counts of common assault on August 24 and two of breaching the restraining order, on August 24 and between August 18 and September 9.

Ruane was given seven months in prison, suspended for two years, with supervision. He must attend the Building Better Relationships Programme and received a new restraining order, which will last until November 2017.
