A FORMER professional footballer shouted "catch me if you can" to a female police officer after she spotted him urinating beside a supermarket.

Ex-Blackburn Rovers and Clarets player Kevin Hird, 52, was today reprimanded by Burnley magistrates after he played "fast and loose" and "should have known better" with Police Constable Siobhan George in Colne town centre.

Hird, who had drunk six pints, was spotted urinating near to the Co-Op store, in Market Street, by PC George at around 10.40pm on December 16, the Burnley court heard.

Prosecutor Bill Moore said the officer drove up beside Hird, to speak to him, but he walked off quickly down the street.

PC George, who was driving a police van, steered the vehicle around Colne's one-way system and came across Hird again on Windy Bank, once more attempting to urinate.

She was about to approach the van when he walked over, reached through the window and touched her on the cheek.

Hird, who lives in Colne Road, Kelbrook, then ran off, saying "catch me if you can", the court heard.

Mr Moore said while there was no physical injury, the young female officer had still alarmed and distressed by Hird's actions.

Initially Hird had pleaded not guilty to assaulting PC George but he admitted the charge today before he was due to stand trial.

James Young, defending, said his client accepted touching the officer on the cheek - and that this would have caused alarm to the officer concerned.

The court heard that Hird, who has no previous convictions, had been drinking with his partner in Colne town centre - and while he was "fresh" he would say he was not drunk.

Later when he realised what he had done, he attended Colne police station and wrote a note, apologising to the officer for what he had done and for "wasting police time."

Mr Young said his client had never been sent off during a 1,500 game professional football career and had only received one yellow card, demonstrating he was not a violent man on the football field or off it.

Magistrates reprimanded Hird for playing "fast and loose" with the officer and warned him he "should know better at his age."

Hird was conditionally discharged for six months and ordered to pay £60 costs.

No compensation was ordered for the officer, given the nature of the assault.

The court was told that Hird was now a special needs teacher and realised the impact that his conviction may have on his new career.

Defender or midfielder Hird, who played for Rovers between 1973 and 1979 and later turned out for Leeds United and Burnley, between 1984 and 1986, before retiring, also provides coaching for youngsters.

God knows how many hours were wasted in bringing this to court. Hird tried to apologise (and rightly so) but I would rather the police used their time to tackle proper villains than persecute someone who acted foolishly. Easy pickings I suppose.

Oh my god i cant believe this story, every man at some time or other has a wee in the street and some women i know of, its just that he was caught for it and gave some policewomen a bit of abuse wow we.
I wouldnt caal touching her on the cheek assault, god knows what would happen if she was properly assaulted.
The police at the best of times do a crap job anyway, unfortunatley this man got caught while the police were about.
The police are never there when you relly need them take poor Mr Shafiq where were they when he needed them bloody nowhere.
The policewomen in question whants to get out abit more.

while i don't like the thought of people peeing in the street,i think the fact this copper was so upset cos he touched her face is ridiculous.gene hunt, you make me laugh, its obvious you'r not a copper,i think most coppers would think her statement is pathetic.i work for the nhs and i'm always being touched,if it went to court every time we got touched the courts would be full.he didn't touch her in a sexual or agressive way,so, get over yourself love.i reckon she may be, like many policewoman these days,a frustrated lesbian manhater, who always seem to further their careers when things like this are taken to court.he wrote a letter of apology and accepted what he had done.she felt alarmed and distressed, she needs to get in the real world.

Clear from all the male posts here that you lot think it's ok for a WPC (or probably any woman) to be abused in this way - he did actually abuse her by touching her face whether it was full of p*** or not. Doesn't matter which hand it was, he had been drinking so probably needed both hands to find it and the fact that he had been drinking makes it more possible that he would have p****d all over his hands.Would he have touched the face of a male cop with his filthy hands, I think not, he took advantage because she was a woman. He still should be sacked.

Steve, nowhere in the job description does it say that she has to put it with crap. It is fair to assume that she will see and deal with a lot of crap but that is not the same as putting up with it. Just as an aside the words alarmed and distressed are standard charging phrases, what she probably felt was more likely to be p1ssed off and angry, but, you can't use those phrases to describe an officers feelings in cases at court. Far from being 'like some victorian filly' the lass was out working on her own late at night. That takes a great deal of self confidence and bravery for a bloke let alone a young female, so fair play to her for confronting Hird on her own in the first place.

Gene Hunt,As a police officer, she does have to put up with all sorts of crap of every description. She signed up for the job, what was she expecting? just stopping speeding motorists ?This offence was PETTY.There are far worse things happening every day to police officers in this country. If you read the report, it says " no compensation was ordered for the officer, given the nature of the assault ".So I`m not the only one who thinks this is a waste of police and court time.Don`t get me wrong, I honestly support the police and all they have to do, but this one was either trying to get some compensation or just shouldn`t be in the job.

Steve, Ive got to disagree with you again. She isn't paid to put up with all sorts of crap, as you put it. She is paid to protect the public and prosecute offenders. What Hird did was police assault,no ifs,no buts. Not many years ago he would have gone to jail for it. It is because of people with attitudes like yours that courts now see this type of offence as petty. Its not petty, its an assault on a police officer. Which in my book is an assault on the fabric of our society. If people think that cops are fair game because they represent authority then this country is in a worse state than I thought. I'll bet that if the story had read 'police woman slaps ex footballer for flashing' you would have been calling for her to be sacked. Damned if she does, damned if she doesn't.

You're all presuming that he used his ****-holding hand to touch her face with.

In fact, when drunkenly peeing in the street I often go "freestyle" so I can wave at the cars with both hands.

I demand a retrial.

O.K. So he had his c*ck in his hand, what if it had been a bomb or some other sort of weapon ? ( no pun intended)would she have just swooned , like some silly victorian filly? She is supposed to be able to put up with all sorts of crap as one of our officers. She isn`t fit for the job and maybe a job in a florists would be better for her.Would any one of you previous commenters realy want someone soooo sensitive turning up to a nasty accident or incident involving you or yours? Cops deal with drunks , druggies e.t.c. every day, covered in God only knows what.If every cop was as weak as her, this country would be even worse than it is now, if that`s possible. Then again, that could be the answer, some of our cops aren`t up to the job.

The filthy pig, having his hands on his willie, probably full of pee and then touching the Officer's face, no wonder she freaked out. Now he is a special needs teacher, wouldn't want him teaching my child, what a role model he is, can't hold his drink. He should be sacked, wonder if his employers know about his conditional discharge?

"catch me if you can",

"whereupon the assailant was caught off guard by a gust of wind and fell to the floor clutching his right shin, calling for medical attention. However, realising he wasn't playing football any more surrendered peacefully."
