A 17-YEAR-old girl was the victim of a serious sexual assault after being dragged into a churchyard.

Police have launched a major hunt after the attack in the grounds of Trinity Baptist Church, off Robert Street, Colne.

They are looking for an olive skinned muscular man with a beer belly, who was in his early 30s and is thought to have spoken with an Italian accent.

Officers said the girl had met her attacker outside Zebras night club, Keighley Road, Colne, at 4am on Sunday.

He befriended her and they began to walk home together, police said.

But when they reached Robert Street she was dragged into the grounds of the Baptist church and subjected to what police said was a serious sex attack.

The victim has been left traumatised and with bruises to her face.

Det Insp Derek Jones, who is leading the hunt, said: "We have reason to believe he had been in Zebras and I would ask anybody with information to contact us.

"The girl is traumatised. She received some superficial injuries and some bruises bit she is not seriously injured.

"This is not a case of someone following the girl or coming out of the shadows.

"It is someone she had been speaking to, although that does not make it any less serious."

The attack has shocked community leaders.

Coun Graham Roach, liberal Democrat councillor for the Waterside ward, said: "It is a despicable act. How anybody can to something like that to a 17-year-old girl, or anyone in fact, is unbelieveable in this day and age."

Mr Jones appealed for witnesses and to anyone who may recognise the detailed and distinctive description of the attacker to come forward.

He is described as white with olive skin, in his late 20s or early 30s, about 6ft tall, of muscular build but with a beer belly.

He had short, dark, spiky hair and was wearing a white t-shirt and dark jeans.

Officers have also said the victim believed her attacker had an Italian accent.

Detectives said they were hoping to release an E-fit of the man soon.

Anyone with information should contact Det Insp Jones on 01282 472618 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Get real Kate! She is 17 and probably a college student or working, probably weeks/months off being classed as an 'adult' in the eyes of the law... dont pin blame for this on her parents who will feel bad enough as it is... this girl and the rest of us should be allowed to walk where we want when we want - there is only one person to blame and thats the piece of scum that raped the poor girl. Because of scum like him most of us live behind locked doors and dare not venture out after dark. All blame on him - leave the lass and her family alone.

FLIMSEY YOU SHOULD TRY THINKING ABOUT THE IMPORTANT PART OF THE STORY INSTEAD OF GOBBIN OFF ABOUT UNDERAGE CLUBBING. PROB ISNT TOO FAR OFF BEING 18 BUT ALL THE SAME THE CRIME IS A DESPICABLE ONE. YOU OBVIOUSLY ARE A KIND OF PERSON I'M GLAD I DONT MEET TOO OFTEN. HOPE AND PRAY IT WONT HAPPEN TO A FEMALE MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY...YOU WOULD SOON BE RETRACTING YOUR UNKIND ATTITUDE.

why is all the focus on the fact that she got in zebras and her parents are to blame.. i am a 17 yr old girl and although i wouldnt go to the zebras nor walk home at 4am i still go down burnley often. the fact is a terrible crime has been commited and this poor girl will be traumatised, rather that blaming numerous innocents think about the scum that actually raped the girl.

my thoughts are with this girl and her family

Trying to detract attentions away from the crime the article discusses,by engaging in argument about underage drinking issues is disgraceful and and in my opinion almost trivializes the horrendous crime committed against this young woman.
She has done nothing that many young people before haven't done...I have and bet most readers all went to a pub or club before reaching our 18th birthday.
Regardless of the time, her age or whether she was alone or not, she should feel safe enough to walk home without being attacked by some sub-human.
Interesting too is the womans description of this animal. I am inclined to believe this may well be another instance where an immigrant of Eastern European origins may well prove to be the attacker. This only serves to further highlight the serious issues East Lancashire has to face up to,re the disproportionately high levels of serious crimes, particularly sex crimes, committed by ethnic minorities.
My thoughts go out to this young woman and her family and hope the creature responsible is swiftly caught.
