AN EAST Lancashire charity has won an award for its work in the community.
The Samaritans of Pendle, Craven, Burnley and Rossendale was named community organisation of the year at a special ceremony held at Nelson Town Hall and hosted by the mayor Pendle, Coun Allan Buck.
The awards are in their inaugural year and are designed to celebrate the work of volunteers and charity workers across the four boroughs.
The group has more than 100 volunteers and costs £30,000 a year to run, but receives no government funding.
Director Pauline Hirons said: "It was an honour for our branch to be nominated so we are absolutely delighted to have been awarded the title of community organ-isation of the year by the Mayor of Pendle.
"This award gives recognition to the tireless efforts of all our volunteers who are providing such an important service.
"By simply listening - over the phone, face to face, by email or text - we are making a real difference to peoples lives.
"We are always ready to welcome new volunteers to the branch and would encourage anyone, what-ever your age or background, to give us a call.
"If you are experiencing emotional distress or want to support people who are going through a crisis in their lives, Samaritans is for you."
