POLICE have spoken out to reassure residents after councillors claimed there had been a number of racist attacks on white residents.

Nelson and Brierfield councillors have called for a crisis meeting with police after claiming there had been a spate of racist attacks by Asian youths.

But police said there had only been three reported incidents in the past four to six weeks in Nelson and Brierfield, and that only one was being treated as a racist crime.

Officers said there was a racist attack on a teenager who was collecting money for charity in the Cloverhill area of Nelson.

Four men have been arrested in connection with that incident.

Officers said two attempted car jackings on pensioners' vehicles, which took place 20 minutes apart in Cuckstool Lane and Halifax Road on April 2, were not being treated as racist incidents.

A racist incident is where the motivation for the crime is race.

Inspector Russ Procter said: "There have been incidents where Asian offenders have targeted white persons, but I would say that not all these offences are race related.

"But we want to reassure residents that there are no specific Asian gangs going round attacking people that we know about. All the incidents have been isolated."

Labour councillor Asjad Mahmood said: "I'm deeply shocked and appalled by what seem to be racist attacks on white residents in Nelson and Brierfield.

"Enough is enough and I want the police to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to this issue." Coun Mohammed Iqbal clai-med: "A few Asian lads have been going around attacking property of residents who are white.

"Windows have been broken by people throwing stones.

"This has been happening for the past four to six weeks and it is becoming quite bad."

Inspector Procter said they were investigating Coun Iqbal's claims and were due to meet him to discuss them.

He added: "All violent crime offences in the area are thoroughly investigated and we have again seen a reduction in violent crime within Nelson this year."

Typical - missing the point. Read the comments and that will lead you to the problems that people seem to have with this administration. This is e-democracy (and you and the liberals should start to realise that the views here are the tip of the iceberg. Come May 1st liberals might wish they had listened.

As for Irfan Ahmed please learn how to spell before entering into public forums..it is spelt "thought" not "thaught". Did you go to school or what...mind you I hear that the lib dem councillors dont really need to speak english or fluent english i should say as they just tow the party line & do as David Foster or Tony Greaves say..

I for one totally agree with Nelsoner that we should debate not quarrel between ourselves. The issue that is most important to me is the A&E going to Blackburn from Burnley. I received a leaflet from Gordon Prentice MP saying how he supports bringing it back etc. Well my message to the Labour Party and the two Labour MP's for Burnley and Pendle is that if you had your finger out of your backside in the first place and stopped YOUR government from doing this we would not have been in this mess. My Son broke his ankle whilst playing football after a 3 hour wait at Burnley we we told to go to Blackburn and before being treated it was another 4 Hour wait what happened to the efficiency of the NHS. DISGUSTING IF U ASK ME.

Guys, guys, guys! I think it's about time someone actually did something. Im in my mid-twenties and have always been a very eccentric person who loves to deliver. Not one for politics but I know the town my kids will be growing up in is a ghost town. Lets rebel! Let's go to the town hall and officially boycott our votes. This is a joke, why are most councillers fat? Money is NOT spent on what it is officially allocated for. There's pilfering going on. These councillers, all of them, are just out for the status. None of them have any relevant talents: persuasion techniques, public speaking, organisation, charisma, experience, political history/knowledge etc etc I am sick of this merry-go-round. I was chatting to the owner of Emery Electrics Shop in Market Street last week and he got it in one. He said: 'Nowadays, the state of local politics is like a playground feud between groups of little girls' Hahaha!
Vote me instead, Bob The Gob!

I have been visitng this page recently and found some of the views immensely interesting and concerning. Not one for local politics, the amount of wastage that has allegedly occured is shameful. As someone who lives in Nelson but works in the city of manchester, I agree with the comments about the state of the Town. This place had a thriving town centre and now its full of third world shops selling cheap and tack goods - the people of Nelson deserve better quality of shops and quality of Life than this. Although not politically inclined, the thing I have decided is that the Liberals have had their moment and maybe someone new needs to be given a chance. As for this Headteacher standing in Bradley, does he live in the locality and does he know what the local issues are? I think its important ot elect someone who is competent but also aware of the local social and economic needs.

All I can say to Anthony Hopkins is that IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT the Liberal candidate for Bradley ward is THE HEADTEACHER at an Islamic Girls school in Nelson. PARDON ME BEING IGNORANT BUT I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT HEADTEACHERS WERE IN POLITICALLY RESTRICTED POSTS!! BUT THEN AGAIN IT IS AN ISLAMIC SCHOOL IN NELSON SO WHAT DO YOU SAY??

I have visited this page regularly for the last couple of weeks and have been viewing the comments left by people. Some of which i agree wth. I totally agree that councillors should be held accountabe for their actions. If i remeber rightly Mahboob Ahmad was voted out of office two years ago as he was incompitent and not upto the job. So people wake up and choose people who represent you and your views and not the ones who do not care about their residents once elected you never see them until april time. Like in Bradley ward there are two main candidates both Asian which i do not have a problem with whatsoever. But Sakib the lab candidate a builder by profession has been a councillor before and is never to be seen after elections thats why he got voted out. Where as Jamil the lib demcandidat is a teacher locally so i feel he will be easily to ge hold off if i have problms. Whereas Sakib might be on a building site i Blackburn what am i supposed to do then. As a Labour voter all my life i think i will be voting lib dems this time as the candidate for Labour has been tried and tested and was a failure. On the other hnd Councillor Iqbal i do not hve any problems with heis easily accessible and he also speaks out in the council chambers unlike other tried and tested councillors

It is a well known fact that the Liberals are on the run in this election. When has the leader of a political party turned up to drum up support for the local elections?? The only one I aware of is Nick Clegg. As for your prospective parliamentary candidate 27 votes registered in one house and that is not counting the children under 18.

What I would like to state that Nelson is in the dumps. FACT The Ethel Austin store in Pendle Rise Shopping Centre is probably going to close very soon as reported in this newspaper earlier in the week. So that will mean another large empty space in the shopping centre. FACT The newly opened Tesco has laid off approx. 40 members of staff only within a few weeks of opening!! FACT No. 1 Market Square has had TWO GRAND OPENINGS (probably at the expense of tax payers)and STILL THE SHOPS HAVE TO LET SIGNS 6 MONTHS ON. FACT:- THE FLAGSTONES OUTSIDE THIS NO. 1 MARKET SQUARE WERE CRACKED & UNEVEN WITHIN A FEW WEEKS OF OPENING DUE TO POOR WORKMANSHIP. FACT:- HOUSING GRANT WORK DONE ON LOMESHAYE ROAD / EVERY STREET AREA HAS BEEN DONE TO A VERY POOR QUALITY. THERE ARE NO QUALITY CONTROL CHECKS IN PLACE AND THE RESIDENTS I BELIEVE HAVE BEEN VERY UPSET. So you have 3 options to vote on 1 May. Vote N Ahmed and get stuffed as usual by the Liberals as their stronghold is Colne and Barlick. Vote M Tariq and I have been informed that he is a successful businessman that owns a lot of properties. OR DO LIKE ME AND VOTE FOR THE REAL CHANGE VOTE VICTORIA LANDRIAU (conservative)

If you represent the majority perception of an areas that is classified as extremely poor I am not surprised which ever politician you elect takes advantage of the situation - no need to make an effort in doing their job because the local are happy with the slop we provide them with - . I don't disagree with you that some work has been done on a few of the houses, but its of such low quality that the builders are still laughing. JUST LOOK AT THE NUMBER OF PROBLEMS RESIDENCE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT AND STILL DOING SO. AS for comparing your area to others - FACT 1: PROSTITUTES ARE PROMINENT ON ST MARYS STREET; FACT 2: ALCOHOLICS AND DRUGGIES SEE WHITEFIED AS THEIR HAPPY PILL; FACT3: ITS STILL THE NUMBER ONE FOR FLY TIPPING FACT4: THE STREETS ARE FULL OF **** - LOOK AT THE ABANDONED MATTRESSES IN BACKSTREETS FACT 5: THE NUMBE ROF MUGGINGS BY DRUGGIES ARE UP. FACT6: MORTE YOUNG PEOPLE WITH A BIT OF SENSE ARE LEAVING THE AREA AND PRIVATE LANDLORDS ARE MOVING IN WITH THEIR TENANTS AND ALL THEIR BAGGAGE.

I don't care which **** party gets elected JUST MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE LIVES OF THE LOCALS - THEY DESERVE THAT. NOW IF YOUR HAPPY WITH YOUR SLOP LIBERAL SUPPORTER, YOUR ONE PERSON THE NEXT COUNCILLOR NEEDS TO WORRY ABOUT DON'T YOU THINK. ITS TRUE YOU CAN TAKE A PERSON OUT OF THE ****, BUT YOU CANT TAKE THE **** OUT OF THE PERSON.

BY THE WAY ITS GOOD TO KNOW ONE OF THE LOCAL PARTY HAS DECIDED TO POLICE THIS SITE - THEY MUST HAVE DRAWN LOTS RATHER THAN ON COMPETENCE.

I dont think ive heard as much of a rubbish false statistic as of that whitefiled a small unheard of ward has been rated so poor nationally? I mean come on there are much worse areas of nelson than this. Every Street has recently seen some nice regeneration and lomeshaye road. But fair enough i do agree liberal did have a few mess ups in their time and like I mentioned earlier i am only voting because the opposition Tariq is a joke haha hes just too much for his own plate. As for conservatives who the hell are these SO CALLED SAVIOURS they are rubbish and always loose for a reason they arent saviours they will help to create this town even more disaster. Mind you most of the nobheads who constantly diss this area aint even from round here, we as residents love living around these areas they are safe(well for some) lively and so on. So get out of here with your rubbish talk about how poor this area is and so on, on the bright side look at the water factory on every street its being regenerated!

To Liberal Supporter. It is a well known fact that Whitefield is in the worst 5% nationally. The Liberals have run Pendle Council for the last 4 years but what progress has there been?? No. 1 Market Square A BIG BIG FLOP. Only benefactors are Council staff. The ACE BUILDING IS DOOMED FOR FAILURE. Central Labour Government has invested millions in East Lancashire. Look at the Sure Starts, the new Schools to be built Pendle Vale to be opened in September. Marsden Heights to be built very soon after. New primary school in Nelson. BUT THIS LIBERAL ADMINISTRATION HAS LET THE PEOPLE OF PENDLE DOWN. It is time for a change and my opinion is that the Conservatives are a good option.

Liberal Support can you inform us less politically inclined people exactly what has Councillor Nadeem achieved in his tenure so far. I refer you to the IMD statistics that show Whitefield is one of the shittest areas in all of lancashire - did councillor Nadeem contribute to this mess? You also happen to be a major area for infant mortality - has Councillor Nadeem raised this in Council chambers? Whitefield has one of the largest numbers of benefit claimants - has Councillor Nadeem raised this in Council meetings or with appropriate stakeholder? Whitefield ward is considered one of the worst in the country for quality of life. Taking al this into consideration would you say Councillor Nadeem is the saviour of Whitefield? I don't know about you, its not about which party wins, its about the calibre of the person representing their area and how they can influence and get resources and marshall the community to take some responsibility as well. If Mr NADEEM is construed as being dynamic by you and others, (and i have already outlined his record on serious issues), then whitefield deserves him for all its worth - **** begets **** as they say in nelson

I have been patiently reading this debate and the following is my humble opinion:

Asian 'councillors' don't know anything about politics more than a fish knows how to ride a bike. (I'm Asian, btw) Ive lived and grown up in Nelson all my life and have seen the town change from a thriving metropolitan hub to a pile of **** that no-one wants to associate themselves with (ask the kids that go to uni, their uni mates never know where Nelson is). When 'campaigning', it's always about 'Oh, I know your Dad and your Grandfather back home is a family friend' - which automatically makes them think you have a duty to give them your vote. Once elected, you don't see the toerags again, till polling day, next year. Local politics isnt about politics anymore, its about social status.

What we need is a straight-talking, no shhit-taking councillor who actually starts making changes. We've been around the 'we'll do this, n we'll do that' merry-go-round too many times. My dizziness is affecting my health. The biggest point I am trying to make is:

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS!

Yeah fella! Good point although I doubt he would escape from nelson very easily. We can find out who his family members are very easily. I furthermore agree on your point how would one man single handedly become the saviour! He wont thats what the Liberal Team is there for lol! Best of luck to the liberal democrats they going to do it again! Mind you im only such a massive supporter of him after looking at his opposition. Mr Tariq from Labour get out of here I would only vote him if I was leaving nelson and wanted to make the residents life hell! As for the conservatives they should not even bother they just loose each time should be intrestin to see by how many hundred votes they loose this time! Anyways im going to go round the liberal comitee CRIB on every street haha!

I agree Liberal Supporter,Nadeem is active I must say but wonder how much he is ordered to tow the party line like the rest of the politicians of all parties..also difficult for 1 man to singlehandedly change anything..

The ACE building at number 1 market st is being made out as though its the saviour of nelson town centre...no big deal it really isnt...we need more businesses opening up in nelson to attract the shoppers not people who simply work there from 9-5 and then go back home to burnley padiham or wherever...

Nadeem better not do a saj karim special on us & exit to clayton le moors or wherever else! or to the tories even!!

Its horrendus what does the council think this is some sort of joke. The residents sure aint laughing. Well said nelsoner. Steph White very sorry to hear about the awful incident that you have experienced...hope the scumbags are caught & locked up for a very long time (which wont happen as we are constantly told the prisons are full!!!)

As for Liberal Supporter from Nelson...what are you on about "you dont blame them" they must have been bored...when I was a kid we didnt have the facilities we do today yet we didnt go out & commit crime..boredom is no excuse for criminality...but as for the council not investing anything for them I must agree with you, Pendle has had about £114 million pounds since 1996...where has it gone?? Probably to create "made up" executive posts within the council & the like after which the remaining sums have been spent on a few new flower pots & stuff in nelson town centre and surrounding areas...I aint a politician, I aint a mathematician & I aint in Management but one thing I can tell you for certain...put me in charge of £114 million pound along with others on here who have posted constructive debate & Im sure we can do a much better job of regenerating the whole of Pendle not just nelson than half of the out of touch council leaders have done....I wouldnt contract Barnfield construction just because they are in with Stephen Barnes (Council Exec) or favour anyone..and when I say regenerate the whole of pendle that would include barlick & cravendale & earby, colne etc not just nelson & maybe brierfield which then creates divisions within the ethnic make ups of the borough!

Well back to the topic I bet it was a bunch of youths who were bored, mind you I dont blame them. They have nothing to do in their spare time due to the council not investing in thing for them to do! It is a joke nowadays I think the police are very helpful pepople and I would be more than happy to submit intelligence to them AND NO I AINT NO SNITCH Just hate rotten rats who walk around the streets thinking they are the next tupac shakur or some blood or crip type gang members. My husband eneded up in hospital after been attacked and dragged out of his car, this all happened round the corner from where i live and has anything been done No the police say sorry we didn't have him in custody, maybe the police should listen when they are been told yes you do! Was this a case of do we arrest any asians as we might get done for racism, what about my hubby who never hit anyone in his life, my son gets charged with assault because he helped his dad, the lad who assaulted my son got 25 hours community service wow! will find out tomorrow what my son gets, guaranteed he gets more.

Agree with your views on defending the rights accorded to us in this great country of ours. Most of the genuine people have started a constructive debate on this site and if the politicians have any sense they will take notice of these, the present and the new ones after May 1st. What has also been highlighted that the ones with their personal attacks and slighting remarks have indicated their lack of intelligence and as a consequence lack of direction - if anything that should hasten change. The point with these comments is about empowering people with whats going on and give them an oportunity to comment on it - alot have done that but we will always be plagued by ones with their insulting and prejudicial views - hey what can i tell you thats democracy at its best and at times at its worst.

I couldn't agree with you. What we need to do is to vote the correct people in on 1 May. We don't want the same old clowns in Nelson who vote what everything LORD GREAVES TELLS THEM TO VOTE FOR. We require change and for that to happen we are going to have to be a catalyst for that. We have had 4 years of this Liberal administration and things have deteriorated from bad to worse. Nelsoner you are right it is a decisive moment in Pendle - we stick with the usual clowns or we make the change - change requires action and that means using our vote for change on May 1st - lets not allow these buffoons to run our areas even further into decline. I do like the idea of getting together and taking people action to make change Nelsoner - let me know what you have in mind and you have my support.

Mumof4 you are right we should stop whinging & do something about it. I know that one of the reasons why the younger professionals who leave nelson to go to university dont return not just because there are no jobs but rather because the area seems to be in going downhill...silly mentality, nothing happening economically or socially for the town etc.

Nelson was a small but busy town in the 80s but it really has gone downhill...it is not all down to immigration or the lack of competence on the part of the councillors or the out of town shopping centres that have opened or the new younger generation being in a league of their own when it comes to criminality..it has happened due to a combination of factors and I am of the strong opinion that we if all pull together as residents of 1 town regardless of race/colour/creed/po
litical affiliation we can make things happen for this town.

Just look at Colne centre compared to nelson on a sat afternoon, its busier yet it has a smaller population...its a mick-take. I suggest that likeminded people get together at some point and do something positive rather than just rant on here about Lord Greaves & Co...we all know that the politicians are going to do NOTHING for the public/town!

Agree about the personal attacks aspect, but I know that the good samaritan has only raised his head when the initial defamatory remarks were chalenged back - I did not notice anybody challenging Dorothy Lords attack on mehboobs intelligence or Lord Greasy's attack on the people of Pendle as being ignorant - YES we challenge the work and accountability of the elected officials but also their personal attacks as well. This is not an arena at times for the feint hearted but are views are expressed eloquently and with diplomacy - these debates are not personal, they are abouT the change required to make OUR areas better, cleaner and people having pride and reasonable quality of life - not expecting much really just the simple things. Mum of 4 you are right about stop whinging and start making the right decision on May 1st - NO LIBERALS IN PENDLE IS WHAT WE WANT.

"Mum of 4" there is no point looking back in 6 months time, nothing will have changed as I just said in my previous post, due to the incompetent councillors who are not in it for civic & public duties but status & the like.

As for not looking after the area, this can only be effectively done when the residents know that if it is not done then they will face a penalty of some sort, not rewarded in the form of regeneration grants..nelson as a whole is the pits because we have collectively let it go down the pan...

This town needs more than a lick of paint and a bit of a clean up of the grot spots it needs **** well sorting out good and proper.
And as for the money spent on doing the houses up where have they been done all around Maurice street and lomeshaye areas the mainly asian areas, if they had kept them nice in the first place they wouldnt need doing and then we could spend more money on other things.
I will look back on here in interest on May 1st to see who has been elected and which ones of you were right.
Then look again in 6 months down the line to see if things have changed for the better or declined.

I for one agree that we should keep the debate genuine but as for personal attacks on politicians that is not on but we should attack their capacity as councillors if they are not up to the job and let's face it most of them really are incompetent.

It is deeply saddening to learn that for the sake of securing the "white" vote councillors are spreding propoganda. With themselves knowing that they are a pack of lies. I live in the Bradley ward and have lived there for the past 40 years and have never had any problems. There are certain people in every society that are racists but that does not mean all socirty is lik that. With regards to all these people that do not use their real names what are you guys afraid of? yourself? If we are to engage in a debate then please do not make any personal attacks on each other. Be clean and engage in the debate constuctively that is my reque
