YOUNGSTERS at a Fence primary school have come up with a novel way of marking Advent.

Year six pupils at Wheatley Lane Primary School have devised a brand new campaign, called ‘Deedcember’, which encourages people to do one good deed a day in the run up to Christmas.

The children have written the good deeds themselves, and will be posting the deeds on twitter each day with the hashtag #Deedcember, to encourage others to take part.

The good deeds include ringing grandparents, helping an elderly neighbour, or giving a toy to somebody less fortunate.

Acting headteacher Sinead Baker said: “We’re a Methodist school so it’s a very big part of our school calendar.

“We were talking about what the purpose of Advent was, and the children came up with the idea.

“Just as there has been Stoptober and Movember, they came up with the idea of Deedcember.

“They will do a good deed instead of expecting to get something from an Advent calendar – it’s about the real meaning of Christmas and advent.”

The school is encouraging parents to follow on twitter, and to tweet their own pictures of themselves or their children doing the deed of the day.

Three local companies, Petty’s Estate Agents, CMS Live and Farnworth Rose solicitors have also pitched in to make a video of the children singing a special Deedcember song.

The video has been posted online on YouTube to drum up support for the Deedcember campaign.

Sinead Baker said: “All the year six children will be doing the deeds.

“We’re really lucky, we have fantastic children.

“They’re really excited, they really want this to take off.

“They want their message to be heard.

“People can also do their own deeds and tell us about it on Twitter, and the children will discuss the deeds each day.”
